marlow magdalene (b. 1994, Los Angeles) is a visual artist working in moving image, performance, and sculpture. His process begins with collecting and categorizing moving images that disturb him, which later becomes an underworld composed of muddy textures, harsh cuts, and distorted sounds. The montage structure comprises low-fi archival footage, photographs, and old news articles.
After receiving a Bachelor's in Fine Art in Film and Media Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, he went on to complete residencies at SF MOMA, SFFILM, and the Minnesota Street Project. His piece, Velvet Rain, opened for Sun Ra Arkestra at the Ukrainian Culture Center in Los Angeles.
He later received grants from the Kennedy Center and awards of recognition from U.S. Representative Barbara Lee and former Vice President Kamala D. Harris. He has exhibited and screened work with the National Museum of African American History, Museum of the African Diaspora, Kennedy Center, Human Resources, Prismatic Ground Festival, Anthology Film Archives, IFC, Carnegie Mellon, MIX Film Festival, Wexner Center for the Arts, and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
He’s currently pursuing his MFA in moving image at Bard College Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts.
